A Thanksgiving Apology
I’d like to wish all (American) readers here a Happy Thanksgiving. I’m probably not going to make a post for Friday and perhaps not Monday, so this will be it for a little while. I’m rarely home these days, so I’m going to take the opportunity of being here to relax and visit with family. So, enjoy your own holidays or, if you’re not in the US, your rest of the week and weekend.
Also, I’d like to apologize for a situation brought to light yesterday by this tweet:
@hmemcpy @daedtech @unclebobmartin BTW love the high quality ads that blog attracts! pic.twitter.com/l6wPazn9q4

For those of you reading without the benefit of ad-block, I’d really like to apologize. It looks like at some point the disqus settings around advertisements reset to “show ads and shady ones at that.” I have no idea when I last updated disqus, so this has probably been going on for a while (I knew disqus would show ads, but I didn’t realize how gross they were). Those should be gone now, so please let me know if you see nonsense like that again. Looking at the credit I’ve earned through this accidental revenue source, the earnings aren’t nearly high enough to start asking the question, “does dignity have a price tag?” I’d rather provide a pleasant reading experience.
For anyone interested, here’s how to get disqus to stop doing that.
Anyway, for the holiday, enjoy this picture of a turkey:
I did wonder before about why such trashy ads were showing on here, but I assumed that you knew.
I was aware that ads of some sort were showing, but I’d only notice them on the rare occasion that I opened the site in IE or something. When I’d happen to see them, they were tolerable because I think some time back disqus popped a pretty bad one and then showed me how to alter the settings when I complained. But in my research the other night, I discovered I could disable them entirely, so that’s what I did to avoid the whole issue.
If we were to make some tongue-in-cheek hypotheses about “why it took so long for people to complain about the ads”, I would list: Hypothesis 1: 99,5% of the audience of this site is composed of geeky male readers; Hypothesis 2: Geeky readers are easy click-bait preys (I admit that I sort of liked those “40 most [whatever] photos of [whatevers] you’ve ever seen” links…). Hypothesis 3: Male audiences are FAR more uneased by photos of unusual food than with nudity and other mild NSFW content, both being superficial and sensationalistic. Anyway, the healthy way you dealt with the topic… Read more »
Personally, when I see ads on bloggers’ sites, I usually find them a bit distracting, but figure, “hey, the person’s just trying to earn a bit of money, so whatever.” Funny thing is, with me, I wasn’t even aware until I poked at disqus’s settings that I was making money off of this. I just figured the ads were disqus’s way of making money off of offering me comment SPAM prevention.
Point is, I guess, that I wouldn’t complain about ads on someone’s blog as a reader, even if I didn’t care for them.
Not sure if you noticed but your embededed tweet seems to have ads on it. And they take up far more screen real estate than the tweet itself.
The tweet included a screenshot of the ads, which is what you’re seeing. Screenshot is part of the tweet.
Haha. I guess I have a low opinion of twitter that I assumed it was them doing it. Makes a lot of sense now though.
